What is a Growth Mindset?

You may have heard or read the statement: "Smart isn't something you are, it's something you become."  This is an expression adopted by our school that presents an important point about student achievement and success.  We sometimes think that intelligence is something you either have or you don't, but this is incorrect.   The right attitude is one of the most important factors for your child and "smartness" can be developed for each and every student.
At Irving, we seek to instill a growth mindset in the following ways:
  • Reminding students that making an effort matters.
  • Reminding them to "stick with it" when they don't find the answer right away.
  • Understanding that when they make a mistake, it's an opportunity to learn. Being proud of their accomplishments and the work that went into it!
We encourage you to take some time and think about what you can say and do with your child to support their growth mindset.
